REMINDER - PRESENTATION NIGHT
This is a friendly reminder to all members that the closing RSVP date for the 2011 Presentation Night is November 1.
To ensure optimal planning and preparation for the evening, it is really important that members make the effort to RSVP by this time.
If for any reason you have not yet received your invitation please contact Scott Dalby immediately via events@southsreferees.com.au
We hope you can join us in celebrating another successful year at Souths Referees.
VALE LIN TURNER
The members of the South Sydney District Rugby League Referees Association are saddened to hear of the passing on the 1st October of our Life Member and former Patron of our association, Mr Lin Turner, who regrettably had been battling cancer his last few years.
Lin joined the association in the mid 1950’s and went on to join the executive in 1960 as the Assistant Treasurer. He held that position until 1964 and was then elected Treasurer of the association the following year in 1965. He was re-elected each year until 1971 and was widely regarded as one of our best treasurers!
On the field Lin excelled just as much. He was appointed to his first “A” grade Grand final in 1968 and then in 1969 joined that exclusive list of members who have been appointed to consecutive “A” Grade Grand Finals.
In his later years Lin went on to join the appointment board and then became a Patron of the association. Those of us who remember Lin’s reports knew only too well he could be as direct as they come, but you would always walk away learning something new!
Lin was highly respected by all and will be sadly missed.
We extend our deepest condolences to his wife Jean and to his extended family.
MUNRO REFS TOYOTA CUP GRAND FINAL
Congratulations to Souths Referees member, Dave Munro on his appointment as referee of the 2011 Toyota Cup National Under 20’s Youth Competition Grand Final. This appoinment tops off a fantastic season for David, which included his NRL Referee debut in August.
Souths Referees would also like to congratulate our affiliate NRL referee allocated to us this year - Matt Checcin on his inaugural NRL Grand Final appointment.
These rewards most certainly reflect their hard work and commitment this year. We all wish him them well for Sunday.
VALE - ROD GORMAN
Souths Referees were saddened yesterday to learn of the passing of the CEO of the South Sydney Junior League, Rod Gorman.
During his long tenure as the CEO of Souths Juniors, Rod has been a tremendous supporter of the Referees Association and will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Rod's family and to the wider Junior League fraternity.
Rod’s funeral service details :
10.30am Wednesday 14th September

Cnr. Sutherland and Coward streets, Mascot
Please see the Daily Telegraph on Saturday 10th September for the funeral notice
ANDREW WHEELER TO REFEREE A GRADE GRAND FINAL
Congratulations to Andrew Wheeler on his appointment to control this Sunday's A Grade Grand Final between Coogee Randwick and Moore Park.
This is Andrew's first A Grade Grand Final and he follows in the footsteps of former graded referees Jason O'Brien, Gavin Badger, Rod Lawrence and Paul Simpkins. We wish Andrew all the best for this match

CANBERRA REFS STRIKE OVER ABUSE
Referees in the Canberra Raiders Cup have voted to boycott this weekend's final round of the regular rugby league season in protest over an increase in abuse on and off the field.
The referees have come under fire in recent weeks, after Belconnen United Scholars hooker Tim Thorley was suspended for 12 months for abusing a referee, but then had his ban reduced to six weeks.
Referees voiced their anger at a meeting last night, deciding to withdraw their services from all three grades for the first time.
This weekend is the final round of the home-and-away season and if games do not go ahead, it could throw the finals series into chaos.
Chairman Dave Adams says the time has come for the match officials to take a stand and send a clear message that abuse will not be tolerated.

MOD LEAGUE RULES CLARIFICATION
Changes to the Law in recent years regarding the restart of play following a try in Mod League, has created a great deal of confusion.
When we had local rules, play was restarted with a tap kick, then when local rules were abandoned, it returned to a kick off, then back to a tap kick and this year back to a kick off.
The changes have been out of our control and reflect the current state of the game which has just undergone a major review.
The NSW Rugby League Academy advised us today (20 May 2011) that from the current round of football, the following experimental law will be trialled in the South Sydney Junior League competition.
Mod League (9-12)
(17) Following a try, the non-scoring team will restart play with a place kick from the centre of the halfway line. The ball need not travel any prescribed distance.
This in effect is a tap kick, just as you would have in Mini Football.
EAGLE BOYS PIZZA HELPS SOUTHS REFEREES TAKE TO THE FIELD
Australian pizza maker Eagle Boys Pizza has thrown its weight behind the South Sydney District Rugby League Referees Association, signing up as an exclusive sponsor.
Members of Souths Referees have officiated at the highest levels of the game including the NRL, State of Origin and Test Matches.

“We’re proud to team up with the oldest and largest Association of Referees in Eastern Sydney and hope that with our support they can continue to do wonderful work in promoting the high standard of rugby league in the region.
“They have an enviable record - in fact almost one third of all First Grade Grand Finals have been officiated by a member of Souths Referees.
“We’re always keen to support the community which supports us. We look forward to Souths Referees enjoying many more successful seasons.”
Eagle Boys Pizza is Australia’s second largest pizza maker and is 100% Australian-owned. It operates more than 335 franchised stores throughout Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, the ACT and the Northern Territory, employing more than 8,000 staff and making more than 17 million pizzas a year.

GREAT ATTTENDANCE TO TRAINING
Souths Referees' first training session of the year started with a fantastic roll up of over 30 Members to Snape Oval last evening.
A big thankyou to all members who turned up. Everyone had a positive attitude and put in a great effort, which was awesome to see.
Thanks also to Scott Dalby and Kieren Irons who teamed together to get everything sorted for the BBQ. Scott was able to book the venue and delegate the purchase of the food and drink to Kieren who managed to get this at a reasonable cost.
All members that continue to attend will reap the rewards training has to offer.
These rewards will come from:
• improved physical performance
• skills training
• improved social / cultural experience within our Association.
To those that were unable to make it, We look forward to seeing you all next Tuesday at Snape Park at 6.15pm.
The Association would like to thank Gavin Badger for his efforts at training tonight and thank him for agreeing to continue to generously give up his time for the development of referees in this District.
We would also like to welcome back Andrew Zapantis (a former Graded Touch Judge and A Grade referee at Souths) who will be influential in the coaching and development of referees this year. Its great to have the likes of Gavin and Andrew active in our Association.
CLOTHING SUPPLIER
With the season just a few weeks away, and an agreement reached with a new exclusive sponsor, Souths Referees have appointed Sinalli Sportswear as our preferred clothing supplier for the next 2 years. In a tender process conducted by the Association last year, Sinalli rated highly for quality and affordability.
Souths Referees President, David Field said, "Sinalli has been very understanding of our delay in securing a sponsor and although they tendered 12 months ago, they've agreed to honour the price they gave us last year."
It is hoped that a finalised order will be placed with Sinalli this week for new on-field gear, polo, training shirt and singlet, tracksuit, spray jacket, hat and kit bag. The new gear will hopefully be distributed to members in the second half of April.
