ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY
09.06.10

The finding of not guilty in the case of Cowboys player Jonathan Thurston in answering a detrimental conduct charge at the NRL Judiciary on Wednesday evening June 2 highlights the absolute necessity for match officials to address the issue of foul & abusive language and intimidation directed towards them on the field.

Match Officials are charged in their remit with upholding the required level of behaviour and respect that can be deemed as acceptable in society. Whilst the incidence of swearing appears to be on the increase in everyday life, its use directed at match officials especially in repetitive manner is unacceptable. It is essential that at all levels of the game match officials react to swearing and in cases of it directed at them take firm action.

This action in the form of sanction may include a penalty, advancement of the mark, sin binning or in some cases dismissal of the player from the field. Match Officials will gain respect from sanctioning poor or foul language in their role on the field.

Conversely a loss of respect will be inevitable amongst players, coaches, administrators and supporters for those match officials that buckle under its outburst. It is extremely difficult if not impossible for a sanction to be applied after the event if no action is taken by the very officials who are charged with the responsibility of sanction who are inevitably the victims.

The NSWRLRA will support all match officials who show strength in dealing with dissent and foul language and calls upon all officials to sanction on the field in the strongest possible manner available to them.

5-METRE RULE RETURNS

September 11, 2009

Recently, the ARL announced a return to the five-metre rule for all U13s and U14s fixtures for 2010 and beyond. This initiative has been trialled by our corporate partners Souths Junior League for the past few seasons.

Below is a recent extract from the Editor column of Big League magazine's Nigel Wall.

"A small but significant change to the game during the week will have a dramatic positive effect on the future of the game: the ARL has announced a return to the five-metre rule for players in the under-13s and under-14s, who now join lower age groups under this rule.

It means less chance of injuries as smaller opponents attempt to bring down

larger-than-average players charging off a longer run at the play-the-ball.

Less injuries makes it a more attractive gams for mums and dads. A wise decision."

NRL JUNIOR SCHOLARSHIP SQUAD
June 25, 2009

In 2009, the NRL Referees established a Junior Scholarship Squad, identifying young men and women who have shown promise in rugby league refereeing.

Two members of our Association, Matthew Rossleigh and Kieren Irons, both studying for their HSC have been selected in the inaugural program. Below is an early recollection by Matt of his experiences so far:

“At the start of this year I was given the opportunity to be selected in the NRL Junior Scholarship Squad, which included 7 other referees of which Kieren Irons was also selected.

In May, I was asked by the NRL to train with the squad for a day, to experience what physical demands they go through in preparing for matches.

I arrived at a chilly Norford Park in Sefton at 8am to begin training. It was here that Robert Finch, Bill Harrigan and Steve Clark greeted me before the training commenced.

My assigned NRL mentor Gavin Badger then gave me a run down of the training session that we were going to do. The session was a lighter session for the NRL squad, but it was still quite difficult for me!

It included different amounts of endurance running, and then at the end of a drill, 2 referees had to referee a game of touch football to practice refereeing whilst in fatigue.

It was good to see our Souths referee Gavin Badger always at the front of the pack, which shows how fit he is.

After this session, we went back to the NRL Headquarters at ANZ Stadium, where a gym session took place. Different referees had different programs that they were assigned to do, and I joined in with Gavin and Tony De Las Heras’ program.

After this session, it was the completion of the physical sessions for the day. Afterwards, some referees went through their games and had debriefs about any incidents. I was lucky enough to go through the Roosters v Sharks game with Matt Cecchin, discussing different events throughout the match.

The day then finished with the Squad having a group discussion about certain talking points from the round that had passed. There was an hour-long discussion about players contesting bombs, which in the end made me even more confused about the rules!

I am very thankful for the opportunity I was given, and I look forward to when I go out there again in the upcoming July school holidays.”

NRL REF FOR A DAY
June 5, 2009

Recently, young referee Jamie Thomas was selected to train with the NRL Referees for a day. Below is Jamie's recount of his experience.

"On Tuesday the 5th of May I was lucky enough to be invited out to the NRL to see what kind of work a first grade referee will do. The session started off at Norford Park with a few running exercises and drills to practice how you will ref with your body under stress and when you are tired.

From there we went to Homebush to go to the NRL referee's office where the boys got some breakfast and analysed a few referee's games from the weekend.

After everyone had eaten breakfast and was completely hydrated, we went down to the gym for another workout to improve fitness for better perfomance.

This was the conclusion of my day, after the day I learnt so much about being a referee and now I am even more keen and excited to achieve more with my refereeing.

I would like to thank Steve Clark, Doug Keen and the NRL Referees for making me feel so welcome and for the experience I have gained from the day."
